Hey there, Gold Coast pool owners! I’m Joel, and if you’re reading this, you’re probably staring at your pool fence and wondering if it’s actually doing its job: or if it’s going to pass a legal inspection.

Whether you’re selling your beautiful home in Burleigh, renting out a villa in Hope Island, or you’ve just realized your current certificate is about to expire, the world of pool fence regulations QLD can feel like a bit of a maze.

I get it. You’ve got a million things to do, and the last thing you want is a grumpy inspector showing up, pointing at a flower pot, and telling you that you’ve failed.

At Get My Pool Certified, we do things differently. We’re a local, family-focused business, and we believe that getting a pool safety certificate Gold Coast should be the easiest part of your week.

In this guide, I’m going to walk you through exactly what you need to do before you book an inspection. Follow these steps, and you’ll be on the fast track to that express same-day certification.

No stress. No jargon. Just simple, practical advice.

🏊 Why Do You Need a Certificate Anyway?

Before we dive into the "how," let's talk about the "why." In Queensland, the law is pretty clear. You need a pool safety certificate QLD (also known as a Form 23 pool safety certificate) if you are:

  • Selling a property: You need a certificate before settlement (or the buyer needs to be notified).

  • Leasing a property: A valid certificate must be in place before a new lease starts or an existing one is renewed.

  • Running a short-term rental: Think Airbnb or Stayz: you need to be compliant!

But honestly? The biggest reason is peace of mind. We want every backyard on the Gold Coast to be a safe haven for kids. That’s why we offer our Family Safety Check for those who aren't selling but just want to know their little ones are protected.

📏 Step 1: The "Big Three" Measurements

Grab a tape measure. You don’t need to be an engineer; you just need to check three basic numbers. If these are wrong, you won’t pass.

1. The 1200mm Rule

The height of your pool fence must be at least 1200mm from the ground all the way around.

  • Check this: Measure from the stable ground (dirt, pavers, or deck) to the top of the fence.

  • Watch out for: Build-ups of garden mulch or new pavers that might have "shrunk" your fence height over the years.

2. The 100mm Gap Rule

This is the "toddler head" rule. No gap anywhere in or under the fence can be larger than 100mm.

  • Check the bottom: The space between the bottom of the fence and the ground must be less than 10cm.

  • Check the bars: The vertical bars (the upright ones) must also be no more than 100mm apart.

3. The 900mm Non-Climbable Zone (NCZ)

This is where most people get caught out. You need a 900mm "clear zone" on the outside of your fence. This means no "climbable objects" within 900mm of the top of the fence.

What counts as climbable?

  • Tree branches (trim them back!).

  • Pot plants.

  • Outdoor furniture or BBQs.

  • Light switches or taps on a nearby wall.

  • Ledges on the house wall.

Pro Tip: If you have a horizontal rail on your fence and the rails are closer than 900mm apart, you might need "tilt-battens" (60-degree wooden fillets) to stop kids from using them as a ladder.

🚪 Step 2: The Gate – Your First Line of Defense

If the fence is the wall, the gate is the door: and it’s usually the first thing to break. A faulty gate is the #1 reason for a failed pool inspection Gold Coast.

The Self-Close Test

Open your gate just a tiny bit: maybe 10cm: and let go. Does it shut and latch on its own? Now open it all the way and let go. Does it still shut? Your gate must self-close and self-latch from any position.

The Swing Direction

Your gate must always swing outward, away from the pool area. This is so a child can’t lean on the gate and accidentally push it open.

The Latch Height

The latching mechanism needs to be out of reach for small hands. Usually, this means the latch release must be at least 1500mm above the ground. If it’s lower, it usually needs to be shielded so it can only be reached by reaching over the top of the fence.

📜 Step 3: Don’t Forget the CPR Sign

It seems small, but it’s a legal requirement. You must have a current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) sign displayed prominently inside the pool area.

  • It must be visible from the pool.

  • It must be in good condition (not faded by the Gold Coast sun).

  • It must show the latest techniques (check that it mentions "2 breaths, 30 compressions").

If you don't have one, don't sweat it. When you book a pool inspector Gold Coast through us, we can usually provide one for you.

🔍 Step 4: Check Your Boundary Fences

Many people forget that their neighbor’s fence might actually be part of their pool barrier. If your pool fence connects to a boundary fence, that boundary fence needs to be at least 1800mm high on the pool side.

You also need to check if there are any climbable objects on the neighbor's side within 900mm of the top of the fence. Since you can't always control what the neighbor does, this can be tricky. We can help you find solutions, like adding a "Perspex" shield or raising the height of the fence.

🚀 Step 5: Book Your Professional Inspection

💡 Real Talk: What if my pool isn't compliant?

First of all: It’s okay.
