G’day! If you’ve ever looked at your pool fence and thought, "Is that gap too big?" or "Does that tree branch make my fence climbable?", you aren’t alone.
Navigating pool fence regulations QLD can feel a bit like trying to swim laps in a suit of armour. It’s heavy, confusing, and honestly, a bit exhausting. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be.
At Get My Pool Certified, we live and breathe this stuff so you don’t have to. We’re a family-owned business on the Gold Coast, and our mission is simple: keeping kids safe and making compliance stress-free for you. Whether you’re a first-time homeowner, a seasoned landlord, or a real estate agent trying to close a deal, this guide is your roadmap to mastering pool safety.
Why Do These Rules Exist Anyway? 🏊♂️
Before we dive into the nitty-gritty measurements, let’s talk about the "why." Queensland has some of the strictest pool safety laws in the world for a very good reason: to prevent the tragedy of childhood immersion and drowning.
The regulations are designed to create a "secure envelope" around your pool. The goal is to ensure that a curious toddler can’t get into the pool area without adult supervision. When you look at it that way, a pool safety inspection gold coast isn't just a legal hoop to jump through: it’s peace of mind for your family and your neighbours.
What Counts as a "Pool"? (It’s More Than You Think!)
You might be surprised by what actually requires a fence under QLD law. If it can hold more than 300mm of water, it usually needs a compliant barrier. This includes:
In-ground and above-ground swimming pools.
Spas and hot tubs (yes, even the ones with lockable lids!).
Portable and inflatable pools deeper than 300mm.
New-age ice baths and plunge pools.

The "Big Three" of Pool Fence Regulations QLD 📏
If you want to pass your pool inspection gold coast on the first try, you need to master these three key areas: Height, Gaps, and the Non-Climbable Zone.
1. The Height Requirement
Your pool fence must be at least 1200mm high all the way around. This is measured from the ground (the "finished floor level") on the outside of the fence.
Pro Tip: If your ground is sloped, make sure the 1200mm height is maintained at every single point along the fence line.
2. The Gap Rule (The 100mm Rule)
Think of the 100mm rule as the "toddler-head" rule. To prevent a small child from squeezing through or under the fence:
The gap under the fence cannot be more than 100mm.
The vertical gaps between bars or glass panels cannot be more than 100mm.
3. The Non-Climbable Zone (NCZ)
This is where most people get tripped up. A 900mm "Non-Climbable Zone" must be maintained on the outside of the fence. This means no "climbable objects" can be within 900mm of the top of the fence.
What counts as climbable?
Tree branches or shrubs.
Ladders and garden tools.
Potted plants.
Outdoor furniture or BBQs.
Even a large rock or a decorative garden gnome!

Don’t Forget the Gate! 🚪
The gate is the most hardworking part of your pool barrier, and it’s also the most common point of failure. According to pool fence regulations QLD, your gate must:
Swing Outwards: The gate must always swing away from the pool area.
Self-Close: It must automatically close from any position (even if it’s only open by an inch!).
Self-Latch: Once it closes, it must latch securely without human help.
Latch Height: The latch release must be at least 1500mm above the ground, or shielded so it can’t be reached from the outside.
If your gate is sticking or failing to latch, don’t wait. A faulty gate is a major safety risk. We can often help with minor adjustments during your family safety check.
Boundary Fences: The 1800mm Exception 📍
Sometimes, your neighbor's fence serves as part of your pool barrier. This is called a boundary fence. The rules change slightly here.
A boundary fence used as a pool barrier must be at least 1800mm high on the inside (the pool side). The 900mm Non-Climbable Zone for these fences is usually measured on the inside of the fence to ensure a child can’t climb down into the pool area.
Boundary fences can be tricky because you often don't have control over what your neighbor puts on their side of the fence. For more help on this, check out our guide on boundary fence drama.
What is a Form 23 Pool Safety Certificate? 📄
If you are selling or leasing a property with a pool in Queensland, you must have a valid pool safety certificate QLD (officially known as a Form 23).
Selling? You need a certificate before settlement, or you must provide a Form 36 (Notice of No Pool Safety Certificate) to the buyer.
Leasing? You must have a valid certificate before the tenant moves in or signs the lease.
A certificate is valid for 2 years for a private home and 1 year for a shared pool (like in a complex). If you’re a seller, you might want to read our checklist for Gold Coast sellers.

Common Mistakes We See Every Day ❌
We’ve seen thousands of pools across the Gold Coast. Here are the most frequent mistakes that lead to a failed inspection:
The "Leaning" Gate: Over time, gates sag. If it doesn't latch every single time, it’s a fail.
New Mulch: Adding a thick layer of mulch to your garden beds can raise the ground level, making your fence height less than 1200mm.
The BBQ Move: Moving the BBQ near the fence for a party and forgetting to move it back.
Vegetation Overgrowth: That beautiful palm tree grew a new branch that is now a perfect foot-hold for a toddler.
