7 Mistakes You’re Making with Pool Fence Regulations QLD (And How to Fix Them Today)

G’day, Gold Coast pool owners! ☀️

If you’re reading this, you probably love your pool. It’s where the kids burn off energy, where you host the Sunday BBQ, and where you escape the Queensland heat. But let’s be honest, pool fence regulations QLD can feel like trying to read a map in the dark.

Between the technical jargon and the strict rules, it’s easy to feel a bit overwhelmed. That’s where we come in. I’m Joel, the owner of Get My Pool Certified, and my mission is to make your pool safe and your certification stress-free.

We see the same mistakes week in and week out. The good news? Most of them are super easy to fix. Here are the 7 most common blunders homeowners make with pool fence regulations in QLD and exactly how you can fix them before your next pool inspection gold coast.

1. The "Invisible" Ladder: Objects in the Non-Climbable Zone 🪵

This is the number one reason pools fail their inspection. In Queensland, we have something called the Non-Climbable Zone (NCZ). Basically, it’s a 900mm "arc" around the outside of your fence where there should be nothing a child can use to climb over.

The Mistake: Leaving pot plants, outdoor chairs, BBQ grills, or even large rocks near the fence. To a toddler, a sturdy pot plant is a perfect step-ladder.

The Fix: Grab a tape measure. Walk the perimeter of your fence. If there is anything taller than 10mm (yep, even a tiny ledge) within 900mm of the top of your fence, move it. If you have trees with low-hanging branches, give them a trim.

2. The Gate That Doesn’t "Click" 🚪

Your gate is the most hardworking part of your fence. It gets slammed, swung, and used every single day. Over time, hinges wear out and latches shift.

The Mistake: Thinking your gate is fine because it looks closed. Under pool fence regulations QLD, a gate must be self-closing and self-latching from any position. If you open it just 2 inches, it should still click shut on its own.

The Fix: Test your gate today. Open it wide, does it shut? Now, open it just a tiny bit, does it still shut? If not, you might just need to tighten the tension on your hinges or spray a little WD-40 on the latch. For more tips, check out our guide on common pool gate failures.

3. The 100mm Gap Rule 📏

Kids are like liquid; if their head can fit through a gap, their body will follow. Queensland laws are very specific about gaps.

The Mistake: Having a gap under the fence or between vertical bars that is larger than 100mm. We often see this after new landscaping is done or when the ground settles over time.

The Fix: Take a 10cm wide object (like a large coffee mug) and see if you can slide it under your fence or between the bars. If it passes through, you’ve got a problem. You can fix this by adding a bottom rail, raising the garden bed level (with something stable), or adding extra vertical bars.

No stress, it’s usually a quick fix! If you want to dive deeper into these measurements, we’ve got a great post on the 900mm and 100mm rules.

4. Trusting the Boundary Fence Too Much 🧱

Many Gold Coast homes use their existing timber boundary fence as part of the pool barrier. It makes sense, right? It’s already there!

The Mistake: Assuming that because a fence is 1.8m high, it’s automatically compliant. If that fence has horizontal rails (those wooden beams that hold the palings), they can act as a ladder. If those rails are on the "pool side" of the fence, it’s usually okay, but if they are on the "outside," a child can climb right over.

The Fix: If your boundary fence has horizontal rails that are less than 900mm apart, you might need to install "fillets" (angled pieces of wood) or cover the rails with a smooth material like Perspex or flat metal sheeting so there’s no foothold. A pool safety inspector gold coast can tell you exactly what you need in minutes.

5. Forgetting About Windows and Doors 🏠

If your house forms part of the pool barrier (common in older Gold Coast homes), your windows and doors have to follow the rules too.

The Mistake: Having a window that opens more than 100mm into the pool area, or a door that leads directly from the house to the pool without a separate fence.

The Fix: For windows, you can install "window blocks" or security screens so the window can’t open wide enough for a child to crawl through. For doors, in most cases, you actually need a fence between the house door and the pool.

If you're selling your home, getting this right is huge for your pool safety certificate gold coast. You can read more about what sellers need to know right here.

6. The "It’s Just a Small Inflatable" Myth 🎈

With the Gold Coast sun, everyone wants a splash. But even those "temporary" pools from Kmart or Bunnings have rules.

The Mistake: Thinking that an inflatable pool or a portable spa doesn’t need a fence. In QLD, if a pool can hold 300mm of water (about the height of a ruler), it must be fenced and have a form 23 pool safety certificate.

The Fix: If you’ve got one of these pools, make sure it’s behind a compliant fence. If it’s not, it’s safer (and cheaper) to empty it when not in use. Not sure if your spa counts? Check out our article on inflatable pools and spas.

7. Letting Your Certificate Expire 📅

You went through the effort of getting your pool certified two years ago. You’re all set, right?

The Mistake: Not realizing that for rental properties, a pool safety certificate QLD only lasts for 2 years (or 1 year for shared pools like in complexes). If you’re a landlord or an Airbnb host, an expired certificate can lead to massive fines.

The Fix: Check your last Form 23. If it’s getting close to that 2-year mark, book a pool inspection gold coast today. We specialize in same-day certificates, so you don’t have to worry about gaps in your compliance.

If you're running an Airbnb, safety is even more critical. Here is a guide specifically for Gold Coast holiday rentals.
