Hey there, Gold Coast pool owners! Joel here from Get My Pool Certified.
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’ve just had a pool inspection Gold Coast and things didn’t exactly go to plan. Or maybe you’re prepping for one and you’re feeling a bit nervous.
First off, take a deep breath.
Failing a pool inspection isn't a crime, and it certainly doesn't mean you’re a bad homeowner. Pool fence regulations QLD are famously some of the toughest in the world. They’re designed to keep our littlest locals safe, but they can be a real headache to navigate alone.
At Get My Pool Certified, we’re all about making this process stress-free. We don't just show up, point out what’s wrong, and leave you with a bill. We’re here to help you get that pool safety certificate Gold Coast as fast as possible, often with same-day results!
Here are the top 10 reasons we see pools fail their inspections on the Coast and, more importantly, how you can fix them fast.
1. The Gate Doesn’t "Click" Every Time 🚪
This is the number one reason for a failed pool inspection Gold Coast.
By law, your gate must be self-closing and self-latching from any position. This includes when it’s barely open. If we open it two centimeters and it doesn't click shut, it’s a fail.
How to Fix It Fast: Usually, it’s just a tired spring or a loose screw. Grab a screwdriver and tighten those hinges or adjust the tension on the spring. Give it a good spray with some lubricant (not WD-40, try a silicone-based one) to make sure it glides smoothly.

2. The 900mm "Non-Climbable Zone" (NCZ) 📏
This one trips up almost everyone.
Basically, you can’t have anything "climbable" within 900mm of the outside of your fence. This includes pot plants, garden furniture, BBQs, or even a decorative rock. If a child can use it as a step to get over the fence, it’s a hazard.
How to Fix It Fast: The fix is simple: Move it! Clear a 900mm arc from the top of your fence. If there's a tree branch hanging low, give it a trim. We call this the "clear zone" and it's essential for your pool fence certification Gold Coast.

3. Your CPR Sign is Faded or Hidden 🪧
Every pool in Queensland needs a compliant CPR sign.
It needs to be clearly visible from anywhere inside the pool area. If yours is faded from the Gold Coast sun, cracked, or hidden behind a hibiscus bush, you won’t get your Form 23 pool safety certificate.
How to Fix It Fast: Pick up a new, compliant CPR sign from a local hardware store or pool shop. Make sure it shows the latest resuscitation techniques. Mount it securely, no zip ties that will perish in the sun!
4. Gaps are Too Big (The Tennis Ball Test) 🎾
The rule is simple: a 100mm ball should not be able to pass through any part of your fence or under it.
We often see gaps under the fence where the soil has washed away after a big Gold Coast storm. Or, palings might have warped over time, creating a gap wider than 100mm.
How to Fix It Fast: If the gap is under the fence, you can add some pavers, extra dirt (compacted well), or a timber sleeper to close the distance. If the palings are the issue, you might need to add an extra rail or adjust the spacing.
5. Direct Access from the House 🏠
If you’re living in an older Gold Coast home, you might have a door that leads straight from your lounge room or bedroom into the pool area.
Under current pool fence regulations QLD, this is generally a big no-no. Doors are not allowed to be part of the pool barrier.
How to Fix It Fast: You’ll likely need to install a new section of fencing to "isolate" the pool from the house. If you're selling, this is a must-fix to avoid settlement delays.

6. Boundary Fence Drama 🧱
Did you know your neighbor’s side of the fence matters too?
If your pool fence is the boundary fence, it needs to be at least 1800mm high on the pool side. If your neighbor has built a garden bed or a shed against it on their side, it might have reduced the effective height of your fence.
How to Fix It Fast: This can be tricky because it involves the neighbors. Usually, adding a "shield" or raising the height of the fence with some lattice or Perspex can solve the issue without a neighborhood feud.

7. Windows Opening Too Wide 🪟
If you have a window that looks out over the pool, and it’s lower than 1200mm from the floor, it can’t open more than 100mm.
If it does, a toddler could potentially crawl through it and fall into the pool. This is a common fail during a pool inspection Gold Coast.
How to Fix It Fast: Install a window restrictor or a security screen. It’s a cheap and easy fix that you can find at most hardware stores. Just make sure it's permanently fixed and can't be easily removed.
8. The "Ice Bath" or Spa Surprise 🧊
With the rise in popularity of ice baths and portable spas, many Gold Coast residents are getting caught out.
If your ice bath or spa can hold more than 300mm of water, it needs a compliant fence. Yes, even if it has a "lockable lid."
How to Fix It Fast: Either move the unit inside a pre-existing compliant pool area or install a dedicated fence around it. Don't risk a fine, or worse!
See our post: Is your new ice bath legal?.
9. Climbing Hazard: The "Vertical Gap" Rule 🪜
If your fence has horizontal rails (like a standard timber fence), they need to be at least 900mm apart. If they are closer, they act like a ladder for a child.
How to Fix It Fast: If your rails are too close together, you can often fix this by adding "fillets" (60-degree angled strips of wood) to the rails, making it impossible for a foot to get a grip. Or, you can cover the fence with a non-climbable material like flat polycarbonate sheeting.

10. General Wear and Tear 🛠️
Sometimes, it’s just age.
Rust in metal fences, rot in timber palings, or loose glass panels can all lead to a fail. A pool inspector Gold Coast will check the structural integrity of the fence. If it wobbles when we give it a firm tug, it’s not safe.
How to Fix It Fast: Walk your fence line today. Give it a shake. If anything feels loose, tighten it up or replace the bracket. A little bit of DIY now can save you a re-inspection fee later!
